Generic advice tells you to build a FAQ. A real answer finds where your renewal sequence is already breaking down

ep. 11

Build a FAQ page. Set up an autoresponder. Create a knowledge base your members can self-serve from. Renewal season floods your inbox every year, and that’s the advice: more infrastructure for an already-lean staff to maintain.

Somebody has to write the FAQ. Somebody has to keep it current. Somebody has to hope members find it before they hit reply on that forwarded dues notice from 2022. Generic advice doesn’t solve the problem. It hands it back to you in a different shape.

Here’s what a real answer looks like.

Your renewal emails go out on schedule, but a good share of your members never open them. The questions come anyway, same questions, same week, every year, and your staff answers them one at a time while everything else waits.

The breakdown isn’t that members have nowhere to look. The breakdown is that the communication they’re getting isn’t reaching them in a way that sticks. Fix that, and the inbox quiets before it floods.

A personalized renewal summary, delivered two weeks early, addressed to the member by name, with their expiration date and their specific next steps in the first line, changes what happens next. Not because it’s clever, but because it removes the reason to ask.

That’s the kind of answer MemberPress.ai gives an association facing this problem. Not a new content project for staff to build and maintain. Not a self-serve portal that assumes members will go looking. A targeted, early communication that makes **[the question unnecessary in the first place](https://memberpress.ai/blog/ask-the-brain/memberpress-companion-seed-the-content-8-ways-to-encourage-people-to-post-in-your-online-community/)**.

The staff don’t get a FAQ to manage. They get their renewal season back.

Generic advice adds work. The right answer removes it, and your staff gets to focus on what members actually joined for.

## Worth knowing

### Why doesn't a FAQ page fix the renewal question problem?

A FAQ page requires members to go looking for answers, and most won't. It also requires staff to write and maintain it. If the real issue is that renewal emails aren't being opened, a FAQ doesn't touch that problem at all.

### What makes an early renewal summary more effective than a standard reminder email?

Timing and specificity. A plain-language summary that leads with the member's own expiration date and next steps, sent before the usual reminder window, reduces confusion before it turns into an inbox full of the same question.

For association executives
