MemberPress says anchor to value, not cost. That's right. But which value signal actually moves your number?

MemberPress published a solid piece on how to price your membership. The core argument: stop anchoring to what it costs you to run the thing and start anchoring to what it’s worth to the member. If your membership saves someone five hours a month or helps them earn more, you can charge $30–$100/month and justify every dollar. Good advice, and true.

It’s also the same advice every membership site gets, regardless of what it actually does or who it actually serves.

The MemberPress framing puts you in the right neighborhood. But “charge what it’s worth” still leaves you standing in a big empty field. Worth to whom? Measured how? Compared to what alternative?

Across thirteen years working with the world’s top membership sites, the pattern holds: the businesses that get pricing right aren’t the ones who best estimated abstract value. They’re the ones who identified the _specific_ signal in their own business that told them where the ceiling actually was.

Sometimes that signal is churn timing. A membership where people cancel after month three almost always has a content depth problem before month three, not a price problem. Charging more doesn’t fix that. It accelerates it.

Sometimes the signal is upgrade behavior. If a meaningful share of your members are on your lowest tier and never move, the floor is often too low, not too high. The people who stayed aren’t price-sensitive; they just never had a reason to see the higher tier as worth the jump.

Sometimes it’s where members came from. A membership built on organic search traffic and one built on a tight email list can have nearly identical content and wildly different price tolerances, because the audiences arrived with different levels of intent and familiarity.

The value-based framing is the right starting point. If you haven’t read the [MemberPress piece](https://memberpress.com/blog/how-to-price-memberships/), it’s worth the ten minutes. But “charge what it’s worth” is the beginning of a question, not the end of one.

The answer that actually moves your number comes from knowing which signal in _your_ business is doing the talking, and whether you’ve been listening to it.

## Worth knowing

### Isn't value-based pricing just the standard advice? What makes it actually actionable?

Value-based pricing tells you the right direction. What makes it actionable is identifying the specific signal inside your own business (churn timing, upgrade behavior, traffic source) that tells you where your actual ceiling sits. The principle is universal; the signal is yours.

### If my churn spikes at month three, is that always a content problem?

Not always, but it's the most common cause. If members are leaving before they've experienced the full depth of what you offer, raising the price rarely helps. Understanding what members did or didn't do in months one and two usually tells you more than the cancellation reason they gave.
