Skool looks cheap until you're earning. Here's where the real cost lives and when self-hosted math starts working in your favor

Nine dollars a month. That’s the headline number on Skool’s Hobby plan, and it sounds like almost nothing.

It’s not nine dollars.

Once you’re earning, the Hobby plan takes 10% of every dollar your members pay you. A community doing five thousand a month in member payments sends five hundred of that straight to the platform, every month, automatically, as a condition of using it. Skool’s Pro plan drops the transaction fee to 2.9% for ninety-nine dollars a month, which is a better deal at scale. It also tells you exactly where the business model lives: the fee is the product.

The faster you grow, the more the platform earns alongside you. That’s not a criticism. It’s just the structure. Know what you’re in.

Self-hosted on WordPress with MemberPress runs differently. Your hosting and plugin costs are flat. They look worse when you’re small (five hundred a month in revenue and your fixed overhead is a bigger percentage of not-much). But flat costs don’t scale with your growth. At five thousand a month, the math has shifted. At ten thousand, it’s shifted further. The crossover point is different for every business, but the direction is predictable.

The transaction-fee comparison also doesn’t capture ownership. On a self-hosted setup, the member list is yours. The payment relationship is yours. The data doesn’t live on someone else’s platform under someone else’s terms. That’s not a small thing if you ever want to move, merge, or simply know your audience is actually yours.

Run your own numbers. Find where your crossover lands. The answer isn’t the same for a community doing five hundred a month as it is for one doing five thousand, which is exactly why the headline price is the wrong number to compare.

## Worth knowing

### At what revenue level does self-hosted typically beat Skool on cost?

Usually somewhere in the low-to-mid four figures of monthly member revenue. Skool's percentage fee keeps climbing as you grow, while your flat costs stay put. Your exact crossover depends on your own hosting and plugin costs.

### Does switching platforms later fix the ownership problem?

Partially. You can export data from Skool, but the payment relationship (your members' card details, their billing history) lives with Skool's processor, not with you. Migrating means asking members to re-enter payment info, and some won't.
