# Your Churn Problem and Your Completion Problem Are the Same Problem

Most course owners treat low completion and high churn as two separate fires. They're not. Here's what that means for your membership

Self-paced means self-abandoned for most buyers. Not a judgment. Just what happens when there’s no structure holding someone to the path they paid for.

Owners feel this as a churn problem. Members stop renewing, referrals dry up, upsells don’t land. So the owner adds more content, more bonuses, more value. The churn continues.

Here’s the turn: the churn problem and the completion problem are the same problem. A member who never finishes never gets the result they paid for. No result, no renewal. No renewal, no referral. No upsell. The whole downstream is blocked at the same point: the moment someone quietly stops making progress.

The owners who work through this don’t add more. They add structure. They find where members are actually falling off (not where they assume it’s happening) and fix that specific gap for their specific audience.

That distinction matters. Generic advice will tell you to send reminder emails, break lessons into smaller chunks, add a progress bar. Some of that might help. But it’s aimed at an average membership, not yours.

The members who finish become something different. They’re your best testimonial. They’re ready for what you’re selling next. They renew because the thing worked.

If you’re watching your completion rates and wondering where people are losing the thread, MemberPress.ai can look at your site and show you **[what’s actually happening with your members](https://memberpress.ai/blog/myth-vs-data/myth-vs-data-12-engagement-predicts-renewal/)** so you can figure out the right next move for your course and your audience.

Completion is the hinge. Everything else turns on it.

## Worth knowing

### I've added more content to keep members engaged and it hasn't helped. Why?

More content gives members more to avoid finishing. The problem usually isn't the amount of material. It's something specific about where momentum breaks down for your audience. Adding content before solving that just moves the drop-off point.

### Is low completion really a renewal problem, or just a nice-to-have?

It's a renewal problem. A member who doesn't finish has no result to point to, no reason to stay, and nothing to tell their peers. Completion is where the business case for renewing gets built or doesn't.
