The cheap monthly sub is the exception, not the rule: what membership pricing really looks like, and why the outcome you deliver should set the price

ep. 06

Membership means cheap and recurring. Ten bucks a month, maybe twenty. You keep the price low so nobody thinks twice, and you make it up in volume. Netflix charges fifteen, and Netflix has a content budget the size of a small country, so who are you to charge more?

I hear this one a lot, and I get why. Almost every subscription in your personal life costs less than a dinner out. When that’s your only reference point, pricing your membership at $19 a month feels like the safe, obvious call.

The pattern says otherwise.

Over thirteen years working with the top membership sites, here’s what we’ve actually seen: only about a third of membership plans are priced under $20 a month. The cheap monthly sub, the thing most people picture when they picture a membership, is a minority of the market. Not the model. A corner of it.

The median membership plan runs about $40 a month. Not the top of the market, the middle of it. Half the plans out there sit above that line.

And here’s the number that surprises people most: about 1 in 9 plans, roughly 11%, are priced at $500 a month or higher. That’s not a rounding error. That’s a ninth of the market charging more in a month than the ten-dollar crowd charges in a year.

So why the gap between the myth and the reality? Because Netflix is the wrong comparison. Streaming services sell entertainment to millions of strangers. Memberships sell outcomes to specific people: a certification that unlocks a career, a community that answers your question in hours instead of never, coaching that actually moves a business forward. When someone can draw a straight line from your membership to a result they want, $40 a month isn’t a stretch. Sometimes $500 isn’t either.

None of this means you should triple your price tomorrow. It means the question was never “what does a membership cost?” It’s “what’s the outcome I deliver worth, and to whom?” That answer is different for every business, which is why we built MemberPress.ai to learn about your site and hand you targeted tactics on where your pricing should actually sit.

The bargain-bin monthly sub isn’t the rule. It’s the exception. Price the outcome you deliver, not the assumption about what membership is supposed to cost.

## Worth knowing

### Are most membership plans really priced at $20 a month or higher?

Yes. Across the membership businesses we've worked with over thirteen years, only about a third of plans are priced under $20 a month. The median plan runs about $40 a month, and about 1 in 9 plans are priced at $500 a month or higher.

### Is a low monthly price ever the right call for a membership?

It can be, when high volume and a broad audience genuinely fit your business. The mistake is defaulting to a low price because you assume that's what membership costs, instead of pricing for the outcome your members actually get.

### How do I figure out where my own membership pricing should sit?

Start with the outcome you deliver and who it's for, not with what other subscriptions charge. The right price is specific to your business, which is exactly what MemberPress.ai is built for: it learns about your site and gives you targeted tactics on where your pricing should sit.
