ep. 07

Find out what the typical membership costs, price yours somewhere near it, and you’ve made the smart, safe call. Nobody gets fired for charging the industry average. It feels like the responsible move, the pricing equivalent of driving the speed limit.

The pattern says otherwise.

Over thirteen years working with the top membership sites, we’ve watched this belief cost people money in both directions. Here’s why. The typical membership plan, the median across everything we’ve seen, sits around $40 a month. That sounds like a useful anchor until you look at what’s underneath it.

Only about a third of plans price under $20 a month. Meanwhile, about 1 in 9, roughly 11%, charge $500 a month or more. Sit with that for a second. The membership market is a room where one corner is selling $15 newsletters and another corner is selling high-touch programs at $500 and up, and the median is just the spot where those crowds happen to balance out.

So $40 doesn’t describe a typical business. It describes the midpoint of a crowd made of very different businesses. A hobby community, a professional association, and an intensive coaching program all live inside that number, and none of them should be priced like the others.

Which means matching the average isn’t safe. It’s borrowing a number from businesses that may look nothing like yours. If your membership belongs at the high end, pricing at $40 quietly caps what your best members would happily pay. If it belongs at the accessible end, $40 might price out the exact audience you built it for. Either way, the average didn’t protect you. It just made the mistake feel reasonable.

A benchmark is directional, not a target. It tells you the range that exists, not where you belong in it.

That’s the real question: not “what does the industry charge?” but “what should a business with my audience, my content, and my model charge?” Generic advice can’t answer that, because generic advice doesn’t know your site. That gap is exactly what we built MemberPress.ai to close. It learns about your business and gives you targeted tactics that fit it, not tactics that fit the crowd.

The average tells you where everyone else landed. The useful number is the one that tells you where you belong.

## Worth knowing

### What does the typical membership plan charge per month?

The median membership plan we've seen runs about $40 a month, but that number sits on top of a very wide spread: only about a third of plans are under $20 a month, while about 1 in 9 charge $500 or more. The median describes the middle of a diverse crowd, not a typical business.

### Should I price my membership at the industry average?

Treat the average as directional, not as a target. It tells you the range that exists, not where your business belongs in it. Pricing to the average can cap a high-value membership or price out the audience of an accessible one, so start from your own audience, content, and model instead.

### How do I find the right price for my membership?

Start with what your specific business delivers and who it serves, then use benchmarks only to sanity-check the range. A generic number can't account for your audience or your model. MemberPress.ai learns about your site and gives you targeted tactics fitted to your business rather than to the crowd.
