# Agent payments: let an AI assistant buy a membership

Agent payments are Stripe test mode only. They work on every MemberPress.ai plan, free included, because each sale runs on your own Stripe account and your own site. They let an AI assistant buy a membership for a person. The person approves the price before anyone pays, and each purchase is a normal MemberPress transaction. Test mode means no real payments are taken, so this is for trying the flow out, not for live sales.

You’ll find it in wp-admin under **MemberPress AI** > **AI agents** > **Agent payments**.

The section has a **Stripe test mode only** label next to **Let AI assistants buy memberships**. Your plan does not change what you see there.

## Set it up

The screen counts your progress (“1 of 3 done”). There are three steps.

1.  **Payment method.** Under **MemberPress** > **Settings** > **Payments**, add **AI Assistant Payments (MemberPress AI)** and choose a Stripe gateway that is in test mode. When this step is ready, the screen says purchases show under the AI Assistant Payments payment method.
2.  **Agent key.** Click **Create a new key**. The AI platform uses this key to call your site. It is shown only once, so copy it when it appears. A new key replaces the old one at once, so the old key stops working as soon as you create another.
3.  **Choose memberships.** Open each membership you want assistants to be able to sell and tick **Available to AI assistants**. Only the memberships you choose can be bought.

Then turn on **Let AI assistants buy memberships**. Assistants can buy the memberships you marked. Turning it off stops that on this site.

## How a purchase is approved

1.  Open the purchase approval link and sign in. Only the person the purchase is for, signed in with that email, or a site administrator can approve it.
2.  Review **Membership**, **For**, and **Price**. For a recurring membership, **Renewal** says “This approves the first payment only.”
3.  Click **Approve this price**. The assistant can now complete the purchase.

A purchase that has expired or already finished can’t be approved. The screen says “This purchase was not found, has expired, or is already finished.”

## Two different things called agent payments

This page is about members buying from your site. Your own AI assistant asking to buy MemberPress.ai credits or a month of Pro is a different feature, with its own consent step in the MemberPress.ai app.
