# Plugin settings: connection, content writing, members and privacy

Updated October 15, 2026

The **Settings** tab of the MemberPress AI plugin is where you connect your site, choose who MemberPress AI writes as, and decide what happens to member data. Open **MemberPress AI** > **Settings** in wp-admin. It has three sections: **Connection**, **Content writing**, and **Members and privacy**.

## Connection

Open **MemberPress AI** > **Settings** > **Connection**.

### Before you connect

The screen is headed “Connect this site to MemberPress AI”. Click **Connect to memberpress.ai**. The screen says: “Sign in at memberpress.ai and approve this site. It takes about a minute.” The approval itself is covered in [Connecting your site](https://memberpress.ai/help/connecting-your-site/), so it is not repeated here.

If the button fails, or your site is behind a password, click **Connect with a key instead** to open the **Connect with a key** screen. It says: “Two steps. You copy one key, one time.”

1. Click **Get a key**. It opens memberpress.ai for this site’s address.
2. Paste the key into the field and click **Connect**.

### Once you are connected

The Connection screen shows that the site is connected, with an **Open MemberPress AI** button, a “Connected since” date and the “Site address” the connection belongs to. A separate section has a **Disconnect this site** button.

Disconnecting asks memberpress.ai to confirm first. If the service cannot be reached (HTTP 502), the site stays connected and the message asks you to check your connection and try again. If you still cannot disconnect from wp-admin, sign in at memberpress.ai and disconnect the site from your account.

If the service does not recognize the connection (HTTP 401 or 404), the plugin removes the credential from this site only. If it cannot clear the local credential, it asks you to try again. For other responses that do not confirm the disconnect, the site stays connected. If the service explains why, the plugin shows that explanation. Otherwise the message gives the HTTP code and tells you to sign in at memberpress.ai and disconnect the site there.

### Needs reconnect

If memberpress.ai stops accepting this site’s key, the Connection screen shows **Needs reconnect** instead of Connected, and says: “MemberPress AI no longer accepts this site’s key, so chat and reports will fail. Reconnect this site to fix it.” Use the reconnect button below that message to connect the site again.

For any other connection message, see [Connection troubleshooting](https://memberpress.ai/help/connection-troubleshooting/).

## Content writing

Open **MemberPress AI** > **Settings** > **Content writing**.

MemberPress AI writes posts, pages and courses as this WordPress user. It cannot write content until you choose one. Pick the user under **Write content as** and click **Save**. Only users who can write posts and pages are listed.

Until a user is set, drafts from Chat or from a connected assistant cannot be placed on the site.

If the user you chose later loses the ability to write content, the screen says: “The user chosen before can no longer write content. Choose another user.” Pick another user to fix it.

To clear the choice, pick **Choose a user** and click **Save**. The screen says “Content author cleared.” Drafts cannot be placed again until you choose a user.

### Menu for new pages

MemberPress AI can add the pages it writes to one of your site menus. Pick the menu under **Add published pages to** and click **Save**. The default is **Don’t add to a menu**.

A page is added when it is published, never while it is a draft. If you unpublish it, its menu item is removed. If the menu you chose is later deleted, the screen says: “The menu chosen before no longer exists, so pages are not being added. Choose another menu.”

### Unsplash Access Key

Featured images for your posts come from Unsplash. This key is optional: leave it empty and MemberPress AI uses its shared key. Paste your own key under **Unsplash Access Key** and click **Save** to use it instead. The site must be connected first.

A key you add is sent to MemberPress AI and is not kept on this site. Once a key is set, the screen says “A key is set” with a **Remove** button. If Unsplash rejects your key, MemberPress AI goes back to its shared key and asks you to save a new key or remove this one.

## Members and privacy

Open **MemberPress AI** > **Settings** > **Members and privacy**. These switches save at once, so there is no Save button to click.

### Erase members in MemberPress AI too

This switch is on by default. When you erase a member under **Tools** > **Erase Personal Data**, the plugin sends the member’s email address to `api.memberpress.ai` while the site is connected. MemberPress AI then deletes the member’s synced record and their cancellation survey answers.

Some things are kept:

- Payment records, without a name or email, so your revenue history stays correct.
- A one-way code made from the email address, so a later sync cannot bring the member back.
- Your own chats and notes that mention the member. They are your records, so erasing the member does not change them.

Turn the switch off if you want MemberPress AI to keep the member’s synced record. The member is then erased from WordPress only.

### Ask members why they cancelled

This switch is on by default. After a member cancels from their MemberPress account page, they see “Before you go, why did you cancel?” above their subscriptions table. Answering is optional, and the cancellation does not wait for it.

The reasons offered are:

- I did not use it as much as I expected
- I finished the content and there is nothing new for me
- I did not get enough out of it
- It costs more than I can spend right now
- It did not work properly for me
- I moved to something else
- I am taking a break and plan to come back
- It renewed when I did not mean it to
- Something else

There is also a free-text box, “Anything else you want to tell us? (optional)”, and two buttons: **Send** and **No thanks**.

If you turn the survey off, MemberPress AI reports that nobody was asked, not that nobody gave a reason. Those lead to different advice: members who were asked and said nothing tell you something, and members who were never asked tell you nothing.

## Where the older settings went

Assistant access, limits and the AI bot settings now live on the **AI agents** tab, and credit display is on the **Credits** tab.

## FAQ

### Why can't MemberPress AI place a draft on my site?

No WordPress user is set to write content. Open MemberPress AI > Settings > Content writing, pick a user under Write content as, and click Save. Until you do, drafts from Chat or from a connected assistant cannot be placed on the site.

### Does erasing a member in WordPress erase them in MemberPress AI?

Yes, while your site is connected and Erase members in MemberPress AI too is on, which it is by default. When you erase a member under Tools > Erase Personal Data, the plugin sends that member's email address to api.memberpress.ai. MemberPress AI then deletes the member's synced record and their cancellation survey answers. It keeps payment records without a name or email, so your revenue history stays correct, and a one-way code made from the email address, so a later sync cannot bring the member back. Your own chats and notes that mention the member are kept too. Turn the switch off under Members and privacy to stop that.
