We've set up MemberPress.ai for AI shopping agents and we're requesting agents now. Here's how to set up your memberships in your own Stripe, in an afternoon.

ep. 06

Someone sits down tonight and asks an AI for a pottery course. Someone else asks for a coaching group for new managers, or a community for people learning to paint. Plenty of people shop that way now: they ask, and an AI shopping agent comes back with a few things worth a look.

If you run a membership, you want the agent to be able to find yours. You want it described properly, at the right price, with a link that lands on your signup page.

What we did with ours

We set up MemberPress.ai for AI shopping agents. We turned it on in our own Stripe account, uploaded a list of what we sell, and we’re requesting agents now. Nothing about how people join us changed.

Then we wrote down every step, so you can do the same for your memberships, in your own Stripe.

Why it’s worth an afternoon

Stripe calls it agentic commerce. You give Stripe a list of your memberships, and the AI agents you choose can read it. When someone asks one of them for something like what you offer, the agent has your membership’s name, what a member gets, the regular price and the link to your signup page.

That’s all the agent does with it: it finds your membership and describes it. Nobody pays inside the agent. The agent sends the person to your site, and they join through your normal MemberPress checkout, like any other member. Their membership renews the normal way, on your site.

So you aren’t handing your members to anyone. You’re giving people who are already asking a clear way to find you.

The five steps, at a glance

Everything happens in your own Stripe Dashboard, and you do it yourself. The full walkthrough has the exact screens. Here’s the shape of it.

1. Turn on agentic commerce. In your live Stripe account, go to Settings, then Payments, then Agentic commerce, and follow Stripe’s short setup guide. You read and accept Stripe’s agentic commerce terms yourself. When the guide asks for an endpoint, leave it blank and click “I don’t need this”: that box is only for purchases made inside an agent.

2. Check the settings and add your policies. Keep the endpoint blank and order approvals off. Then add your refund policy page, your terms of service page and your privacy policy page. Agents show these to people, so they need to be your own pages, on your own site.

3. Make your product feed. This is a spreadsheet saved as a CSV file, with one row per membership: its name and billing period, a few plain sentences about what a member gets, its regular price, an image and the link to its signup page. One column matters more than the rest: set disable_checkout to true on every row, every time you upload. That keeps each listing discovery-only, so people join on your site. Upload the file, and Stripe tells you when your feed is ready.

4. Try it with the Test Agent. Every agent on the Agents tab starts as Disabled. Turn on the Test Agent first, and check that your memberships show up and that each link lands on the right signup page.

5. Request the agents you want. Pick the ones that suit a membership; some are built for clothes or other goods, so skip those. Requesting one means agreeing to that agent’s terms, so read them first. Then wait for the request to be approved.

When a price or a name changes later, update that row and upload the file again. Stripe doesn’t see changes on your site by itself.

What stays on your site

A visitor who comes from an agent joins the same way as anyone else: your signup page, your MemberPress checkout, your emails. Your members, your prices and your payments all stay in your own MemberPress and your own Stripe account.

Free trials and intro offers stay on your signup page too. The feed carries the regular price for each billing period, and your page shows the rest.

If you ever want to stop, you can take one membership off the list or switch agentic commerce off altogether from the same Stripe page.

There’s also agent payments, a separate feature where an agent buys the membership itself, and it’s still in testing.

Worth knowing

Can AI agents find my membership?

Yes, once you list it. You give Stripe a product feed with one row per membership, and the AI agents you request can find it once each request is approved and describe it. The agent sends the person to your membership's signup page, and they join on your own site through your normal MemberPress checkout.

Can an AI agent buy my membership for someone?

Not with a listing. Each membership is listed as discovery-only, with checkout turned off on every row, so nobody pays inside the agent. People join on your own site, and the membership renews the normal way there. Agent payments are a separate feature, in Stripe test mode only.

What do I need before I start?

A Stripe account you can sign in to, the signup page link for each membership you want to list, and a public page on your own site for your refund policy, your terms of service and your privacy policy. Agents show those pages to people, and people join on your own site.

Connect your site and tell Opal what you sell. She sets up your Join and Checkout pages and tells you what’s left before anyone can pay, like connecting your own Stripe or PayPal. Your password never leaves your site.
